The Wenchuan Earthquake was a rare catastrophe that was both the most destructive event and the biggest challenge for massive rescue operations since the founding of the People's Republic of China. The success of the post-disaster relief and urban-rural reconstruction projects touched the hearts of Chinese people from all walks of life. Indeed, the CPC Central Committee and the State Council had lost no time in mobilizing the whole country to accomplish the recovery and reconstruction of the disaster areas in just three years, creating a miracle in the world post-earthquake reconstructions. As a professional in architecture, it is my duty to devote myself to the task of post-earthquake reconstruction in disaster areas. Under the arrangement of the Architectural Society of China, I led a team to design the Beichuan Cultural Center with a Qiang village theme while introducing modern concepts and technologies; and I was honored that the Center was popular with all parties. We all felt glad that we had managed to provide permanent buildings for the affected people.
