　　Selected Readings in English Literature is to serve as a textbook for Readings in English Literature， a companion-course to History of English Literature， for third-and fourth-year students majoring in English in Chinese colleges and universities.The selected readings included herein are all taken from original writings in English literature through the centuries， with the exception of excerpts from Beowulf and Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales for which modern English translations are given in the place of the original works in Old English and Middle English. As a rule， short texts chosen are given in their entirety， while longer works are represented by excerpts. In accordance with the wishes of a number of teachers who will be using this book， we have included more selections here than are necessary for normal classroom use so that teachers may feel free to make their own choice.Ample notes for difficult words and phrases in the selections are provided in simple English， in rare cases with added brief explanations in Chinese，There are short introductory remarks to precede each selection and there are two appendices at the end of the book： Appendix I giving biographical sketches of the authors of the selections and Appendix II a list of books （with specified editions and dates of publication）， from which the texts in this anthology are taken.We have tried here to give selections of representative works in English literature from its beginnings to the 20th century， but our personal inclinations make it almost impossible to avoid arbitrary choices. We welcome suggestions for improvement from our readers so that revisions may be made from time to time.

　　陳嘉（1907—1986），我國(guó)著名的翻譯家、教育家和英美文學(xué)專家。1928年他從清華學(xué)堂畢業(yè)后，考取庚子賠款獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金赴美留學(xué)，先后獲得威斯康星大學(xué)文學(xué)學(xué)士學(xué)位（1930）、哈佛大學(xué)文學(xué)碩士學(xué)位（1931）和耶魯大學(xué)文學(xué)博士學(xué)位（1934）。學(xué)業(yè)有成后，陳先生決定立即回國(guó)報(bào)效祖國(guó)，先后就任浙江大學(xué)、武漢大學(xué)、西南聯(lián)大以及中央大學(xué)外文系教授。從1949年起，陳先生長(zhǎng)期在南京大學(xué)外國(guó)語(yǔ)言文學(xué)系執(zhí)教，曾擔(dān)任南大外文系主任、外國(guó)文學(xué)研究所所長(zhǎng)、《當(dāng)代外國(guó)文學(xué)》創(chuàng)刊主編、第一屆國(guó)務(wù)院學(xué)位委員會(huì)學(xué)科評(píng)議組成員、中國(guó)外國(guó)文學(xué)學(xué)會(huì)副會(huì)長(zhǎng)、中國(guó)外語(yǔ)教學(xué)研究會(huì)副會(huì)長(zhǎng)、中國(guó)英語(yǔ)教學(xué)研究會(huì)副會(huì)長(zhǎng)、全國(guó)美國(guó)文學(xué)研究會(huì)副會(huì)長(zhǎng)、江蘇省翻譯工作者協(xié)會(huì)名譽(yù)會(huì)長(zhǎng)等職務(wù)。陳嘉先生為我們留下了寶貴的學(xué)術(shù)和精神遺產(chǎn)。他的四卷本《英國(guó)文學(xué)史》是改革開放之后我國(guó)出版的第一部系統(tǒng)的用英文撰寫的英國(guó)文學(xué)研究專著。該著作和其后出版的三冊(cè)《英國(guó)文學(xué)作品選讀》在國(guó)內(nèi)影響很大，一直是國(guó)內(nèi)多所高校英國(guó)文學(xué)教學(xué)的指定教材，至今仍然具有十分重要的學(xué)術(shù)價(jià)值。
